Quietly and almost secretly, the Jockey Club celebrated its farewell on January 6, 2025: The Ibiza beach bar legend, founded in 1993 and always family-owned, is closing for the first time in winter and is to be sold. Together with regular guests, the treasures from the wine fridges were drunk on Día de los Reyes Magos (Epiphany), the team hugged each other, tears flowed. "In April we will all be here together again - if not as employees, then as guests," said a long-time waiter who did not want to be named, highly emotional.
Rumors about new owner
There is nothing on the homepage, on the Instagram account and certainly not in the island press about the future of the Jockey Club Ibiza. The employees are also keeping quiet: the club is due to reopen in April with a new owner. It is not known whether the staff will be taken on. Negotiations have not yet been completed. At least that much I was able to find out: the new owner is said to be Spanish, a regular Jockey Club guest. Not a group like Grupo Mambo (including Villa Mercedes, Cala Gracioneta, Sa Capella, Casa Maca) or Grupo de Empresas Matutes (including Ushuaïa, Hï, Hard Rock Hotel, UNVRS)... Even if I am shocked and at least skeptical about the future of my beloved local bar, this at least gives me hope that the Jockey Club has not sold its soul and that the new owner will treat this unique Ibiza institution with care. Since I first visited the Jockey Club in 1996, I have associated this legend with this very special Ibiza feeling and love this beach bar, which is something between a chiringuito and a beach club, both in summer when it is packed and especially in winter when it is so wonderfully relaxed. It would be dramatic if the Jockey Club were to become the next posh beach club...
Family business since 1993
The Jockey Club Ibiza has a long history: it all began in 1991 when Julio Lanzoni (Don Julio) fell in love with Ses Salines and opened a juice bar on Es Cavallet beach. In 1993 he founded the Jockey Club on Salinas beach. In 1998 his eldest son Pep Lanzoni joined the management and in 2002 Oliver Lanzoni, the youngest son, took over the management of the company. Since its foundation, the Jockey Club Salinas has been run as a family business. Many employees have been part of the family for more than 20 years, some even since the first season.
